# The Winner

**Winner of the Week:** Sophie Nélisse

**Show:** _Yellowjackets_

**Episode:** Season 2, Episode 6 - “Qui”

### Why Her?

If you’re anything like me, Fridays can never come soon enough. The marking of the weekend ritual holds a special place in the hearts of many for one reason or another, but, for me, one of the major points is the drop of the newest [**_Yellowjackets_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/yellowjackets-117488) episode. The second season of Showtime’s unsettling survival drama has taken an increasingly deeper and more personal dive into the traumas experienced by the titular high school soccer team’s members every episode. Although the series premiere gave a [horrific glimpse into the girls’ eventual loss of humanity](https://screenrant.com/who-gets-eaten-in-yellowjackets/#:~:text=The%20first%20episode%20contains%20several,their%20fellow%20plane%20crash%20survivors.), recent episodes have been increasingly visceral and stunning in their exhibitions of the team’s descent into depravity. Traumatic event after traumatic event, the team members can be seen trying to [make the most of their situation](https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a43511673/yellowjackets-season-2-episode-3-ending-explained-recap/) (both in the past and in the present), but the recent episode, titled “Qui,” shows possibly the most striking and influential experience for the perpetually-conflicted Shauna.

_Yellowjackets_ has utilized every episode to establish that no single character is exempt from emotionally or [physically scarring](https://slate.com/culture/2022/01/yellowjackets-van-showtime-unkillable.html) events–however, Shauna has had a particularly tough run of things. From the loss of her best friend’s trust to the loss of that best friend altogether in the season 1 finale, followed by the [otherworldly and unforgettable consumption](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/yellowjackets-cannibalism-it-isnt-what-you-expect/) of the not-so-recently-deceased’s frozen corpse, the teen has dealt with a staggering amount of loss. However, the most recent episode sees what could easily be Shauna’s breaking point: the birth, life, and sudden death of her newborn son.

While _Yellowjackets_ has a [wealth of celebrated cast members](https://www.sho.com/yellowjackets/cast) (made even more impressive with the recent additions of [Elijah Wood](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000704/?ref_=fn_al_nm_3)’s Walter and [Simone Kessell](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0450274/) as adult Lottie), [Sophie Nélisse](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4563869/)’s consistently stellar portrayal of the younger Shauna has once again taken viewers’ breath away with the show’s latest entry. The emotional toll of the sixth episode was hefty for a large portion of viewers, but the young actress responsible for the episode’s most jarring scenes was subject to an even more demanding process. In an [exclusive with ET’s Deidre Behar](https://www.etonline.com/interview-yellowjackets-sophie-nelisse-talks-shauna-birth-episode-season-2-exclusive),  Nélisse explained the weight of the responsibility:

## _It was definitely just a very emotional and, like, very heavy-duty week… I just wanted to live up to the expectations and I was really scared I wouldn't… What I realized is that the birthing experiences are so personal and different for every woman and I was just trying to honor that diversity within the episode._

Nélisse’s commitment to her _Yellowjackets_ role is unquestionable (the same can be said for her performances in other projects like [**_The Rest of Us_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-rest-of-us-605874) and [**_47 Meters Down: Uncaged_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/47-meters-down:-uncaged-480105)), but one has to give special credit for her ability to adapt to the ever-changing atmosphere of the show and how it has affected her character. Playing a central role in a show with such high stakes and so many passionate viewers requires an immense amount of professionalism and flexibility. Nélisse’s weekly performance shows the actress’ consistent dedication to excellence.

[Confirmed for a third season](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/tv/a43483589/yellowjackets-season-3-news-date-cast-spoilers/), the current run of _Yellowjackets_ will wrap up Shauna’s story with its finale on June 2nd, 2023. Until then, I don’t think I’ll be alone in patiently awaiting Nélisse’s next show-stealing performance.

**Movie:** _Beau Is Afraid_

### Why Him?

[**_Beau Is Afraid_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/beau-is-afraid-798286), the hypnotic Kafkaesque fever dream of anxiety and despair, is the byproduct of director-screenwriter [Ari Aster](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4170048/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1)’s anxiety-riddled mind and A24’s bold gamble of giving “[one of the most extraordinary new voices in cinema](https://www.gq.com/story/ari-aster-martin-scorsese-interview-beau-is-afraid-a24)” a budget of $35 million to play around with. After the overwhelming success of his first two horror gems—[**_Hereditary_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/hereditary-493922) and [**_Midsommar_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/midsommar-530385)—put him on the auteur map ([sort of](https://www.slashfilm.com/1268714/beau-is-afraid-director-ari-aster-auteur/)), Aster’s third feature was bound to shock and disturb. I doubt even the most passionate artsy horror fans, however, were prepared for just how bizarre it turned out to be.

The official synopsis for the movie is as basic as it gets: A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother. While the premise may sound simple enough, the experience of watching it is anything but. The viewer is immediately thrust into this chaotic world by experiencing Beau’s birth from his own (in utero) point-of-view. This opening shot sets the tone for the rest of the movie—bizarre and disorienting—which [Joaquin Phoenix](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001618/?ref_=tt_ov_st) can pull off better than almost any other actor.

This movie allows Joaquin Phoenix to show off his range as one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood by putting the entire spectrum of emotions on display. From debilitating anxiety and paranoia to full-blown terror, Phoenix crafts the greatest cinematic depiction of mommy issues since [**_Psycho_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/psycho-539) (1960). The universe of this story is a heightened, fantastical version of reality—including some [incredible stop-motion animation](https://www.indiewire.com/features/animation/beau-is-afraid-animation-ari-aster-1234830868). If viewers can appreciate how bizarre and unnerving the scenes they’re watching are—and remove themselves from trying to understand the story from a literal lens—open-minded audience members can have a great time wallowing in all the surreal elements. 

However, there’s an equal chance you hate everything about this movie. Case in point: A dozen or so people walked out of my local theater in the Seattle area while I was watching it on opening night. Despite the punishing runtime of 179 minutes—which you feel every minute of—_Beau is Afraid_ is worth it because of the captivating performance from Joaquin Phoenix. The 48-year-old actor is a master of portraying characters descending into madness. Like his critically acclaimed performance in [**_Joker_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/joker-475557), I couldn’t look away. This movie would fundamentally not work without Phoenix’s complete dedication to the role, which is why he’s been named Likewise’s Winner of the Week.

It’s rare to see big-budget horror-comedies. Phoenix offers a refreshing, surreal performance in Ari Aster’s self-indulgent nightmare 'Beau Is Afraid.'

# The Winner

**Winner of the Week:** Ronald Gladden

**Show:** _Jury Duty_

**Episode:** Episode 8, “The Verdict”

### Why Him?

By now, we’ve grown so used to the mockumentary-style sitcom. From [**_The Office_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/the-office-2316), [**_Parks and Rec_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/parks-and-recreation-8592) and [**_Modern Family_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/modern-family-1421) to [**_Reno 911_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/reno-911-2187), [**_What We Do in the Shadows_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-83631) and [**_Abbott Elementary_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/abbott-elementary-125935)—we’ve seen it all. Blurring the line between reality and fiction, viewers feel like they are in on the joke, while also getting more unvarnished insight into incredibly specific characters (including plenty of awkward, [cringe-inducing antics](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap0ae1Z8qGg)). But it seemed impossible to make the gimmick feel fresh and inventive. That’s one reason why [**_Jury Duty_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/jury-duty-222023) has become such a word-of-mouth sensation. 

I first heard about it from a friend who said it was on his TikTok FYP. As he explained the [Amazon Freevee](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/jury-duty-222023) series’ premise, it sounded like a quirky prank show. The concept? A documentary crew follows a group of jurors—including [**_X-Men_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/x-men-36657)’s very own Cyclops, [James Marsden](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005188/)—as they take part in a trial in California. The twist is everyone is an actor except for unsuspecting Ronald. That’s right: It’s an elaborate [**_Truman Show_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-truman-show-37165)-style situation where all of the actors are improvising around his responses to the increasingly bizarre trial—and the results are priceless. 
 
Of course, since we’re all cynical know-it-alls, the first question is always: This has gotta be faked right? It even has an A-list Hollywood actor! How could he NOT KNOW IT WASN’T REAL???

Well, when 30-year-old [Ronald Gladden](https://www.instagram.com/sunnyg_sd/) responded to a Craigslist ad in 2021 to be a volunteer juror in a “documentary,” he [bought the premise](https://www.vulture.com/article/jury-duty-interview.html). So it seems like nice, adorable Ronald is just a pretty swell guy who is game for almost anything. Except he (thankfully) says no when he’s uncomfortable, without expressing judgment, like when juror Noah (played by [Mekki Leeper](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4941635/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_0_nm_1_q_Mekki%2520Leeper) from [**_The Sex Lives of College Girls_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/the-sex-lives-of-college-girls-134373)), asks Ronald to jump on the bed while he and fellow juror Jeannie ([Edy Modica](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7254946/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_q_Edy%2520Modica)) participate in an act known as “soaking.”  

I’m not going to spoil all the many zany things that happen, but let me just say, when one set-up includes Marsden clogging a hotel toilet and asking Ronald to take the blame (and he does!)—I was hooked.

## _“In my gut, I knew the entire time something wasn’t right.”_ - Ronald Gladden

Fans have praised the everyman for how he carried himself during the bizarro show, with one tweeting: "Right I think it’s fairly safe to say that Ronald Gladden from #JuryDuty is one of life's truly nice, genuine people. The way that he treats all of the weird characters with so much respect and kindness is so heartwarming to watch."

Gladden, now a project manager at Home Depot, is certainly the winner of the entire series (and not just for telling Marsden his favorite role of his of all time is not for [**_The Notebook_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-notebook-11036) but rather the raunchy movie [**_Sex Drive_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/sex-drive-13523)). And as he’s reiterated multiple times: No, he’s not an actor. As he explained in an [interview with _GQ_](https://www.gq.com/story/ronald-gladden-jury-duty): 

> _[T]hey got me multiple times saying, like, ‘I'm on reality TV.’ Literally more than once I said that. But anytime that I would seriously start to entertain that idea, anytime I would start to go down that rabbit hole, I’d be like, well if that’s the case, all of this would be fake and it’s all about me. And it’s like, how conceited of a thought would that have to be? ‘Oh, this is all about me.’ The idea that it was fake was even crazier than what was happening. So I had to choose realities [based on] which one makes the most sense. Everything being fake sounded the most ludicrous._

Marsden told [_Access Hollywood_](https://www.nbc.com/access/video/james-marsden-made-sure-ronald-gladden-knew-his-jury-duty-friendships-were-real-after-big-reveal/ACCN333701735) that it was the “[wildest experience](https://www.hellomagazine.com/film/489703/jury-duty-amazon-prime-freevee-everything-to-know/)” he’s ever done in his 30 years as a professional actor. “We created a hero's journey for this guy, we've surrounded him with a group of weirdos and hopefully by the end of the show, he becomes the leader and unites us all. And he did that because he's a great guy." 

It’s what I liked most about this show: As a viewer, it restores my hope in humanity a little bit.

Winner of the Week - Ronald Gladden in Jury Duty

# The Winner

**Winner of the Week:** Sarah Snook

**Show:** _Succession_

**Episode:** Episode 4, "Honeymoon States"

### Why Her?

[HBO](https://likewisetv.com/lists/everything-coming-to-hbo-max-this-week-5d6e9cbd5253010024bfe463)’s [**_Succession_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/succession-76331) has been one of the most highly recommended series since its premiere five years ago, and its juicy conclusion is finally being laid out to all those who have been biting their nails in anticipation. The strained dynamics among the members of the Roy family serve as _Succession_’s bread and butter, but as each new stress-inducing episode consistently adds another dish to the buffet of deceit, fans have often been left wondering what every little detail and bombshell alike have been leading to.

Luckily, Episode 4 of the fourth and final season, [titled “Honeymoon States,”](https://www.vulture.com/article/succession-season-4-episode-4-recap-honeymoon-states.html) both answers some long standing questions and raises more. Finally, the chosen successor to media conglomerate Waystar Royco’s throne has finally been named: the son of the late Logan Roy ([Brian Cox](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004051/?ref_=tt_cl_i_2)), Kendall ([Jeremy Strong](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0834989/?ref_=tt_cl_i_8))–a reveal met with a generous variety of mixed reactions from other family members and stakeholders. Throughout multiple seasons of the one-percent’s unique brand of treachery, corporate coups, and infighting, the main matter of _Succession_ has always been clear: the enigma of who will be taking on the succession of the family business. With this (seemingly) cleared up—at least for now—the focus of the show has shifted to the ensuing fallout and the various characters’ reactions, one of the most captivating coming from [Sarah Snook](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3512758/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_0_nm_8_q_Sarah%2520Snook)’s Shiv Roy.

For better or for worse, every character in the show has demonstrated a great amount of personal and professional development, and Shiv’s has been nothing if not outstanding as of late. While the passing of the torch to Kendall was a hefty plot point, the beginning of this episode also hints at a potential (rather, highly likely) [pregnancy for Shiv](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/succession-sarah-snook-shiv-pregnant-1235378240/). Considering the pregnancy, the high-stakes of current business affairs, and numerous other factors, it’s not hard to say that the Roy family daughter has much on her plate.

## _“I bet you’re worried you picked the wrong horse… You might have picked the dead horse.”_

Capturing such a huge amount of drama and intrigue for one character would likely be daunting for even the most seasoned of actors, but Sarah Snook makes it look effortless. As a series mainstay, audiences have been lucky with the amount of time they’ve spent with the increasingly complex Shiv, and the first four episodes of Succession’s final season have brought both the character and the performance to the forefront of millions of viewers’ lists of favorites.

**Show:** _Beef_

**Episode:** Episode 9, "The Great Fabricator"

### Why Her?

_Warning: Potential spoilers ahead!_

Road rage is the impetus of [Lee Sung Jin](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2768206/)’s new [Netflix](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/netflix/) series, [**_Beef_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/beef-154385), which debuted last week, and is already one of the most exciting new shows of the year. [Steven Yeun](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3081796/) and [Ali Wong](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4399227/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1_tt_6_nm_1_q_ali%2520wong)—who last worked together on Jin’s animated [**_Tuca & Bertie_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/tuca-&-bertie-79356) as literal lovebirds—both deliver incredible performances in this harrowing and realistic black comedy. 

Fans of Yeun are already familiar with his Oscar-nominated role in A24’s [**_Minari_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/minari-615643) and Jordan Peele’s [**_Nope_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/nope-762504), not to mention his breakout as Glenn Rhee, a former pizza delivery boy fending off zombies, in [**_The Walking Dead_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/the-walking-dead-1402) (but don’t forget to check out [**_Okja_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/okja-387426) and [**_The Humans_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-humans-588367) as well). Up until this point, most people may remember Wong from her star-making [**_Baby Cobra_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/ali-wong:-baby-cobra-396292) comedy special (which she performed while seven months pregnant), so seeing her transform in this latest standout role is certainly a game changer.

After the initial car chase scene in episode 1—which is like a suburban _Fast & Furious_ recast with a sensible sedan vs a pickup truck—we are introduced to Amy, who seems like a sensible (yet frustrated) businesswoman with a picture-perfect life: caring handsome husband, cheerful young daughter, and a chic, modern home. But things quickly escalate as she and nemesis Danny become embroiled in a feud over 10 episodes, and the chaotic cycle of unhinged vengeance spirals. By the penultimate episode, Amy attempts to get her daughter back from Danny’s vengeful criminal cousin Isaac, which results in a hostage situation and several surprisingly graphic deaths.

Don’t worry: There’s plenty to laugh at along the way. Like when Danny and Amy spend the final episode wandering through the wilderness and at one point start tripping balls from tainted elderberries.

Some may wonder if Wong’s stunning performance is because she was able to tap into her own personal drama to excavate raw emotions, since she divorced her husband, Justin Hakuta, in 2022. She explained that _Beef_ gave her “the opportunity to talk about a lot of things that I haven’t found a way to talk about in my stand-up.” But she’s clear to separate herself from her character of Amy.

“If I worried about what people thought, I probably wouldn’t create anything,” [Wong told _Rolling Stone_](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/ali-wong-steven-yeun-road-rage-beef-interview-1234696998/). “As long as I understand, which I always have, that everything I do is a representation of some honesty, but not a full representation, that’s the healthiest way to go.” 

At one point, Wong reveals the vulnerability and fear at the heart of Amy when she asks during a therapy session: “Do you think love can really be unconditional? You know, there must be some point where we all fall outside the reach of love. Like the mistake is so big and then the love has to stop.” It’s her ability to straddle the soft-and-hard mix of emotions in this role that proves that Wong is ready for more meaty roles (pun intentional)—and we can’t wait to see what she does next!

### Why Him?

Unlike some public figures who find success, make their money, and then intentionally fade out of the limelight, [Adam Sandler](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001191/) has remained remarkably consistent throughout his career as an actor. In fact, he’s been cast in at least one movie or TV series every year since 1993! His latest, [**_Murder Mystery 2_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/murder-mystery-2-638974), is now on Netflix and delivers the goofy, lighthearted giggles we’ve grown to expect from him.

From gaining popularity on [**_Saturday Night Live_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/saturday-night-live-1667), first as a writer and then as a performer (1990-95), to honing his craft as a dramatic actor in [**_Punch-Drunk Love_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/punch-drunk-love-8051) (2002) and eventually returning to his roots with a stand-up comedy special, [**_Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh_**](https://likewisetv.com/movies/517596) (2018), it’s clear that he’s crushing it. Not to mention his [four-movie deal](https://www.indiewire.com/2020/01/adam-sandler-netflix-deal-extended-four-movies-1202207433/) with Netflix worth $250 million that got renewed for even more films! Although his movies are rarely nominated for Academy Awards, viewers love him—which is why we’re elated to see him win the [Mark Twain Prize](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CukbxgucLc) for American Humor a couple weeks ago.

In _Murder Mystery 2_, Nick (Sandler) and Audrey Spitz ([Jennifer Aniston](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000098/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)) return to solve another high-profile homicide, this time after their friend is abducted on his wedding day. Despite now having four years of full-time private investigator experience, Nick Spitz still has terrible aim with his gun. Even his alter ego “Nicky Two Guns”—who was responsible for some of the [funniest scenes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmDV5W-UQ2E) in the movie—couldn’t hit a shot. Since he has no chance of defeating the enemy with precision accuracy, the viewer is blessed with some Adam Sandler hand-to-hand combat, which is a pleasant surprise. Although this flick is nowhere near the [**_John Wick: Chapter 4_**](https://likewisetv.com/blog/winner-of-the-week-scott-adkins-in-john-wick-chapter-4) level of choreography, it makes up for it in the endlessly likable “we’re not arguing, this is just how we talk” New Yorker dynamic between Nick and Audrey.

Thanks to the success of Rian Johnson’s subversive whodunit films [**_Knives Out_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/knives-out-546554) and [**_Glass Onion_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/glass-onion:-a-knives-out-mystery-661374), the murder mystery genre has seen a resurgence in popularity. And naturally, Netflix gets even more of its share of the pie. While some critics are calling the film a “Budget _Knives Out_,” I’d flip it and would argue that _Knives Out_ is a “Budget Adam Sandler comedy.”

### Why Him?

Delayed from its original theatrical release date of May 27th, 2022, the long-awaited [**_John Wick: Chapter 4_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/Movies/John-Wick-Chapter-4-603692) recently hit theaters and made one thing inarguably clear–it was worth the wait. This bullet-riddled love letter to fans has everything one could ask for in a _John Wick_ entry: engaging action sequences, memorable characters, smooth choreography, and undeniably high stakes. This fourth film has proven to be a gratifying–yet bittersweet–finale to the solemn hitman’s arduous, years-long journey ([or has it?](https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-is-john-wick-5-happening-heres-what-we-know-so-far-576551)) and has blown away even the most gratuitous box office expectations with its opening weekend boasting [$73.5 million in sales](https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/weekend-box-office-results-john-wick-chapter-4-destroys-competition-with-franchise-best-opening/) (for reference, the original [**_John Wick_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/john-wick-245891)’s opening weekend saw only $14.4 million).

Unsurprisingly, _John Wick: Chapter 4_’s success is due in part to the amazing performances that give life to the colorful cast of psychotic ne'er-do-wells populating the franchise’s criminal underworld–many of whom are made almost _too_ likeable by the actors depicting their various crimes. Fans of the series will recognize performances from stars such as [Ian McShane](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0574534/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) as Winston Scott, [Ruby Rose](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3199307/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) as Ares, [Common](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0996669/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) as Cassian, [Bill Skarsgård](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0803889/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) as The Marquis, and more. Enter: [Scott Adkins](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0012078/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) as the washed-up cardplayer, Killa Harkan.

## _“The moment you sat down at my table you already lost.”_

In the fourth chapter of the series, John Wick disposes of hitmen and assassins all the way to Germany, leading him to an encounter with one of the [High Table](https://johnwick.fandom.com/wiki/The_High_Table)’s big bads: [Killa](https://johnwick.fandom.com/wiki/Killa_Harkan). Unlike other notable showdowns in the franchise, the duo’s confrontation starts off with a simple game of poker meant to decide the protagonist’s fate. However, this being a _John Wick_ movie, the game takes a turn for the worst and results in a characteristically violent end for Killa. Ultimately, Killa’s bold gamble wins him the payout of a merciless beatdown from Wick, thus ending the crime lord’s time on screen.

Scott Adkins’ portrayal of Killa was a demanding one. The hefty use of restrictive, weighty [prosthetics](https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/an-underrated-action-icon-didnt-mind-being-buried-under-unrecognizable-prosthetics-for-john-wick-chapter-4/) (reminiscent of [Colin Farrell](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0268199/)’s role as the half-silicone-half-man Penguin in [**_The Batman_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-batman-414906)) mixed with the nuance of portraying a threatening presence through a comic relief character serves only to highlight Adkins’ mastery over his craft. Despite its brevity, Killa’s time in the film left no single second wasted and captivated audiences and critics alike–winning Adkins a spot on our Winner of the Week roster.

# The Winner

**Winner of the Week:** Billie Eilish

**Episode:** Episode 4, “Running Scared” (3/17/2023)

### Why Her?

[Billie Eilish](https://www.billieeilish.com/#/) made her acting debut as Eva, an entrancing cult leader, in Episode 4 of [Donald Glover](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2255973/) and [Janine Nabers](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3958656/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1)’ new psychological thriller, [**_Swarm_**](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/swarm-220116). The series follows a young woman named Dre ([Dominique Fishback](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6195774/)), a die-hard superfan of the fictional Beyoncé-esque music icon, Ni’Jah. Dominique Fishback’s unhinged performance in the series is worthy of praise and pairs nicely with the twisted debut screenplay by [Malia Obama](https://www.etonline.com/swarm-inside-malia-obamas-wild-tv-writing-debut-on-donald-glovers-series-exclusive-200891)—yes, that Obama. But once Eva was introduced, I couldn’t take my eyes off her, making her the Winner of the Week.

In episode four, Dre is on the run and is heading to Ni’Jah’s next concert in Manchester, Tennessee. She meets a nice woman at a gas station who invites Dre to spend the night at a house where her friends are staying. Having nowhere else to go, Dre accepts and soon encounters Eva. I was completely enthralled by Eilish’s eerie performance as a soft-spoken, friendly, hippie gardener-type. If you’ve ever met somebody like Eva—a stranger who’s overwhelming generosity and openness feels too nice—you know there’s probably reason to be cautious.

From the first interaction between Dre and Eva, you get the sense that something is off about her, but you can’t put your finger on exactly what. Dre learns that Eva is the Executive Director of DecaWin, a women's empowerment group that specializes in “unlocking the female potential. Teaching, learning, training. And most of all, healing.” In other words, she’s a cult leader. In fact, DecaWin was inspired by the infamous [NXIVM cult](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/billie-eilish-swarm-nxivm-cult-1235353604/). Eva is the epitome of the wealthy, connected, and creepy spiritual folks that come to mind when you think of various Hollywood-adjacent organizations that prey on people’s insecurities. 

It’s hard to believe Dominique Fishback is 31 years old and Eilish is only 21 because their roles in the show are essentially flipped. Dre is emotionally immature—and deranged—while Eva is a cunning, charismatic thirtysomething. When Billie’s character first appeared on screen, it took me a few minutes to realize it was her! Her cadence was calm and welcoming, and her subtle facial expressions were unsettling. Yes, I was fully convinced I was watching a real-life cult leader in action—and she already knows a thing or two about [rabid fans](https://www.papermag.com/billie-eilish-avocados-fans-2644844935.html#rebelltitem2) and followers.

So far, Eilish feels natural in front of the camera. Fishback told [_Rolling Stone_](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/swarm-billie-eilish-acting-debut-cult-leader-nxivm-donald-glover-dominique-fishback-prime-video-1234698659/) that Eilish was “respectful of the craft. She came in with ideas, wanting to talk about it, being game to rehearse.” Although her appearance in the show was short-lived, Eilish was given an opportunity to put her acting chops on display, and she absolutely crushed it (pun intended).

Winner of the Week - Billie Eilish’s Acting Debut in Swarm

# The Winner

**Winner of the Week:** Michael B. Jordan

**Movie:** _Creed III_

### Why Him?
[Michael B. Jordan](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0430107/) reprises his role as the heavyweight boxing champion Adonis Creed in his anime-inspired directorial debut, [_Creed III_](https://likewisetv.com/items/Movies/Creed-III-677179). The third movie in the series (and ninth in the broader _Rocky_ movie franchise), it has [surpassed expectations at the box office](https://variety.com/2023/film/news/michael-b-jordan-creed-3-100-million-globally-1235543390/), raking in $100 million globally on opening weekend.

Unlike the previous movies, [Sylvester Stallone](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000230/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) does [not make an appearance](https://variety.com/2023/film/news/sylvester-stallone-creed-3-absence-explained-1235538273/) as Rocky Balboa in _Creed III_. While some longtime _Rocky_ fans might be disappointed by this, it’s clear that the story is no longer dependent on the legacy of Rocky meeting the present. Instead, it’s about Adonis creating and cementing his own legacy. And come on… don’t you think 47 years is enough [_Rocky_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/rocky-1366) content? 

While this is [Michael B. Jordan’s first time](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/michael-b-jordan-creed-iii-black-panther-oscar-grant-black-hollywood-1234676708/) taking the helm on a project of this scale—a $75 million budget is no drop in the bucket—it’s not his first time being a part of massive productions. He’s worked with some of the best filmmakers (like his pal [Ryan Coogler](https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/ryan-coogler-michael-b-jordan-podcast-in-proximity-1235540594/) when they first worked together on [_Fruitvale Station_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/fruitvale-station-157354)), and he's acted on some of the biggest movie sets (including the [_Black Panther_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/black-panther:-wakanda-forever-505642) movies), making him a great fit to take responsibility for continuing this beloved franchise.

When it comes to boxing movies, there’s one thing that every fan expects: epic action. I can assure you,_ Creed III_’s fight sequences are the strongest in the franchise—I’m still thinking about the weight of the final battle. Jordan has not been shy in sharing his passion for Japanese anime and manga in [interviews](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHZzBrRDquA&t=210s) over the years but, admittedly, after hearing that the fight sequences in _Creed III_ were inspired by anime, I was doubtful that they would shine as bright as they do. It’s refreshing to see a director pay homage to the media that shaped their style as a filmmaker in a very direct way—even [including a Naruto poster](https://www.comingsoon.net/anime/features/1271890-creed-iii-anime-references) in young Adonis’ bedroom.

_Side note_: It comes as no surprise that [Jonathan Majors](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3718007/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3) is marvelous as Damian Anderson. He’s a worthy opponent for Creed because he can challenge him physically (I mean, look at those [muscles](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjrv5VvFyKs)!), but he can also tap into a deeper, more emotional side of his character since the two have a history together. We’ve done enough raving about Majors in our previous [Winner of the Week](https://likewisetv.com/blog/winner-of-the-week-jonathan-majors), so today we’re going to keep the spotlight on Jordan.


After the biggest opening weekend so far for the trilogy and positive reviews all around, _Creed III_ is on track to be a commercial and critical success. Part of me wishes the series would conclude with this movie because it feels like a great place to end the story. However, the logical part of my brain knows the studios will most likely juice every cent they can out of Creed’s name. That’s not such a bold take considering Michael B. Jordan told [Complex](https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/michael-b-jordan-creed-iii-interview): “I feel like the Creedverse is definitely going to expand and grow, and it can go a bunch of different ways.”

### Why Her?

The finale of Season 1 of [_1923_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/1923-157744), the [_Yellowstone_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/yellowstone-73586) prequel series, wrapped up with romances beginning to blossom and major storylines remaining unresolved. Naturally, viewers were left itching in anticipation for Season 2. While the show’s main storyline follows power couple Cara ([Helen Mirren](https://deadline.com/2023/02/1923-helen-mirren-cara-irish-roots-first-season-1235273368/)) and Jacob ([Harrison Ford](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000148/)) Dutton, the series’ most emotional arc has been focused on [Teonna Rainwater](https://western-series.fandom.com/wiki/Teonna_Rainwater) ([Aminah Nieves](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm12422413/)). Teonna is a young Native American woman from the Broken Rock Reservation who was stolen from her family and put in a boarding school like many other Indigenous children from 1891 through the early 1900s. 

As depicted in horrifically accurate detail, it was common for Indigenous children to suffer physical, sexual, and psychological abuse at these boarding schools. “I think it's important because it's very rare to see our truths being told, and as raw as this is, on a big platform,” Nieves told [_Entertainment Weekly_](https://ew.com/tv/1923-season-1-finale-postmortem-aminah-nieves-teonna-interview/). “For me, that was something that drew me to [the show], and something that made me a little nervous about it. It was like, okay, this is on Paramount—this is the _Yellowstone_ universe. This means a lot.”

There’s a haunting moment at the start of episode eight between Father Renaud ([Sebastian Roché](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003067/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)) and the sheriff in which the Catholic priest mentions that enough of the children die at the boarding school every year to warrant a graveyard. This highlights the horrible fate that was met by many of the children that were at these boarding schools. Having personally experienced her own versions of discrimination throughout her childhood and adult life, Aminah Nieves says that she was able to access Teonna’s anguished screams on a visceral level.

Although most of the season was doom and gloom for Teonna, she was given a respite from the tragedy when, near the end of the finale, her love interest, Pete, embraces her and allows her to finally let her guard down, if only for a brief moment. As a viewer, it was great to see glimpses of these deeply human moments for Teonna, a woman we’re rooting for but who has faced nothing but hardship thus far. This budding romance did not have the chance to grow into anything more substantial, but we can hope it continues to [develop in Season 2](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/yellowstone-1923-season-2-release-date-paramount-plus/).

Nieves and [Mo Brings Plenty](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2511354/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), who served as the American Indian Affairs Coordinator for both creator [Taylor Sheridan](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0792263/)’s _Yellowstone_ and _1923_, put an immense amount of effort into researching the history of the boarding schools, interviewing elders from a variety of tribes, and even learning the [Crow language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crow_language) to speak it in the show. The role of Teonna allowed Aminah Nieves to show her range as an actress—from killing Sister Mary to reuniting with her father and eventually breaking down emotionally in front of Pete. It’s clear that Nieves’ role in _1923_ means a tremendous amount to her and the entire Indigenous population, further adding to the [complicated politics](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/24/opinion/yellowstone-woke.html) at the heart of one of TV’s most popular franchises.

### Why Him?
First up, a confession: I am not a Marvel Cinematic Universe completist. So far, there are 40 movies in this pantheon of big-budget blockbusters, which you can [watch in chronological order](https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/marvel-movies-in-order) or just stream whenever you get a hankering to revisit [Robert Downey Jr.](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000375/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), the Chrises ([Hemsworth](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1165110/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_4), [Evans](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0262635/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), [Pratt](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0695435/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1)), [Chadwick Boseman](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1569276/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1), [Elizabeth Olsen](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0647634/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1), [Scarlett Johansson](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0424060/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), and the rest of the pantheon of stars do their superhero thing. And don’t forget the TV series! With all of that pressure, it can feel like quite a commitment to suss out all the storylines and time shifts and world(s)-saving. That may be one reason why the latest, [_Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/ant-man-and-the-wasp:-quantumania-640146), may feel like such a dud for those of us who aren’t diehard fans. [_Variety_’s Owen Gleiberman notes](https://variety.com/2023/film/reviews/ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania-review-paul-rudd-evangeline-lilly-jonathan-majors-1235514462/) that while "Marvel films have never pretended to be stand-alone entities," he's "rarely encountered a Marvel adventure that’s this busy with a do-or-die saving-the-cosmos plot that feels this much like it exists simply to set up the next dozen chapters of something." Great?

Despite [Paul Rudd’s ineffable charm](https://likewisetv.com/blog/paul-rudd-s-most-loveable-characters-ranked), I’ve never quite understood the appeal of his underrated, underseen _Ant-Man_ hero: he can suddenly grow and shrink at lightning speeds! Now, we are entering the MCU’s “fifth phase,” and this latest movie serves as an important stepping stone into the broader universe. Sounds like homework?

Luckily, one of the most pleasurable parts that one could always count on in these bloated orgies of CGI excess has been the MCU villains. From Thanos ([Josh Brolin](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000982/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)) to Loki ([Tom Hiddleston](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1089991/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)) and [Cate Blanchett](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000949/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_2)’s unforgettable Hela (and [all the memes](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/2083445-taika-waititi-and-cate-blanchett)), the bad guys are typically worth the price of admission. Now enter [Jonathan Majors](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3718007/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1) as Kang the Conqueror. We already got a taste when he appeared as a variant known as [He Who Remains](https://www.slashfilm.com/1181618/jonathan-majors-says-there-are-no-similarities-between-kang-the-conqueror-and-he-who-remains/) in the [_Loki_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/loki-84958) Season 1 finale, but now he’s delivering one of his most deliciously ridiculous performances as one of the MCU’s most long standing baddies. And we applaud him for that. Sporting two facial scars (mimicking the lines on the comic book character’s helmet) and a permanently quivering lip, Majors chews up the scenery and keeps the flick from being completely dull. We know there’s no escaping a cinematic landscape with all these tentpole films (thanks a lot, [Kevin Feige](https://ew.com/movies/kevin-feige-marvel-phase-5-exclusive-interview/)), but at least we can look forward to a lot more Jonathan Majors as Kang.

If you’re not already familiar with the star’s work, he’s been racking up plenty of cred over the years. I first witnessed his amazing abilities in the indie film [_The Last Black Man in San Francisco_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-last-black-man-in-san-francisco-522039), which is a moving and unforgettable performance. Then he wooed us as the hero of the short-lived, acclaimed [_Lovecraft Country_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/lovecraft-country-82816) (RIP), and now he’s transformed into a godlike bodybuilder for [_Magazine Dreams_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/magazine-dreams-784524) (which received plenty of [critical acclaim](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/magazine-dreams-review-jonathan-majors-1235307793/) at Sundance). Next up: He goes head-to-head with [Michael B. Jordan](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0430107/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1) in [_Creed III_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/creed-iii-677179).

### Why Her?
Season 4 of [_You_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/you-78191), continues the “[eat the rich](https://likewisetv.com/lists/Best-Eat-the-Rich-Shows-and-Movies-63eab762532c6a003231cb86)” craze that has taken pop culture by storm: we’re looking at you [_The White Lotus_](https://likewisetv.com/items/shows/the-white-lotus-111803) and [_The Menu_](https://likewisetv.com/items/movies/the-menu-593643). But the premise alone is not enough to keep me engaged in _You_’s repetitive and tiresome plot. Yes, Joe Goldberg ([Penn Badgley](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0046112/)) must, once again, flee his previous home, change identities, and hide the truth that he is (despite his delusional reassurances) a killer.

Fortunately, _You_ Season 4 has a refreshing twist thanks to the captivating performance from [Charlotte Ritchie](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2492359/) as Kate, Joe’s new neighbor and love interest. Kate is an independent, suspicious, and fierce art gallery director who embraces the moniker “icy bitch.” A refreshing aspect of Season 4 is that Kate is the first character in the series to acknowledge Joe’s inner monologue that narrates a majority of the show. Near the end of episode one, Kate interrupts one of Joe’s daydreams with:

## _"Oi, where did you go?"_

This sudden break from Joe’s thoughts is as shocking to the viewer as it is for Joe. It gives the sense that Kate can somehow see Joe for who he really is, a feeling unfamiliar to Joe. As the episodes progress, it becomes increasingly clear that Kate has the ability to notice Joe’s inner thoughts—and proceeds to call him out on them.

This sense of self-awareness highlights the absurdity of Joe’s thoughts and actions and allows the show to take itself a little less seriously, which it desperately needed. One part charming, two parts terrifying and psychopathic, Joe is as creepy as ever in Part 1 of Season 4 of _You_.
